The next morning I had breakfast on the East River and went to Battery Park just to see the Statute of Liberty. Because I'd been to the Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island before and didn't have 3-5 hours to visit this time, I just saw her from the park. Afterwards, I headed over to the Rockefeller Center to get an awesome view of the city. I didn't feel like spending $30 to go to the Top of the Rock, (although I do recommend it if you've never been and it's got way better views than the Empire State Building) so instead I settled on the Rainbow Room bar just a few floors below. For half the price, I got a margarita and the same view. Then it was off to spend the rest of the day at Central Park. I walked around the park until sunset. It felt so good to just be outside and see the trees and ponds. I think this was when I knew that it was time to get back to Oregon and get back to the PNW lifestyle! Once the sun set, I went to my hostel to gather my things and take the bus back to DC. But on my way to the bus station, I came across Heartland Brewery. I'd never heard of it, but I thought what the heck, I have a few minutes to spare. Man, oh man, I still can't believe this brewery doesn't distribute. You would never know, but they have a famous Oatmeal Stout that has won multiple awards at GABF and for good reason too! It was so good! It was the perfect way to end my trip to New York and I'm sure glad I decided to not skip over this city.
I'll be honest, when I was planning this trip I was a little hesitant to put New York on the list. I've been to New York a few times and so I debated about forgoing this stop and picking a city I'd never been to instead. What won me over was the 9/11 memorial and the fact that every time I visited, it still hadn't been completed. It was something that I really wanted to see, since I remember the area when it was all still rubble. I also wanted really wanted to visit Brooklyn Brewery, obviously, and to walk around Central Park because I had been dying to get outside and do some hiking all summer.
On my first day in New York, I walked from my hostel in Midtown all the way to the 9/11 Memorial, just relaxing and taking the sights in. I took the tour of the 9/11 Memorial Museum, something I HIGHLY recommend. It was a very emotional experience. After touring the museum, I decided I could use a beer to cheer me up, so I headed over into Brooklyn Brewery to try their beer. It did not disappoint. Well, except for the fact that they close at like 8pm on a Saturday, it did not disappoint. After last call, I went back to Manhattan to visit a favorite bar of mine, McSorley's. I like McSorley's because they only serve two types of beer- light and dark and because the bar history will amaze you. If you ever get the chance to go, ask the bartender for the bar book of poems. I ended my first night in the Big Apple by going to Times Square to see the lights.
